Overview

Whether you are a history buff or take a keen interest in the Renaissance, the two Medici Chapels are must visit. This skip-the-line ticket is perfect for a hasslefree entry into this incredibly lavish mausoleum and a key site on the Florence Renaissance trail.

Nestled in the Basilica of San Lorenzo, they are home to not only three beautiful Michelangelo sculptures, but also the final resting place for 49 members of the powerful Medici clan. Locally called as Cappelle Medicee, these two unmissable structures dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries has been influenced by the artistic genius of Michaelangelo who had the Medici family as well as the Grand Dukes of Tuscany as his patrons. Currently, it truly is a pilgrimage spot for art lovers. Right at the entrance, you will be greeted by a statue of Anna Maria Luisa de Medici, the last member of the family and the one who bequeathed the entire Medici family collection of art to Florence, including Michelangelo's sculptures. Art lovers are especially grateful to her for the fact that she donated it on the only condition that it would be open to the general public.

The chapels provide a brilliant opportunity to marvel at a lovely array of artistic masterpieces, including Michelangelo's Sagrestia Nuova as well as the three sculpture groups on the tombs - Dawn and Dusk on the sarcophagus of Lorenzo il Magnifico, the Night and Day on the sarcophagus of Lorenzo's son Giuliano, and the unfinished altarpiece of Madonna and Child.
