Visit to the Old Quarter

The Casco Viejo was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1997. Today the enchanted historic city is a combination of Colonial, Art-Deco, Renaissance, Neo-Classical, Baroque architecture, among many others.

On this tour of the Old Town, we will visit its main squares and churches, such as the church of San José famous for its baroque altar, carved in mahogany covered in gold leaf, next to the Plaza de Catedral.

We will continue with the tour in the Casco Viejo towards the Plaza Bolívar, in this square the centennial Amphithetical Congress was signed, in the centre of the square, we will see the monument in honour of the liberator Simón Bolívar. On the same site, we can see the church of San Francisco, the Bolívar Palace, Hotel Colombia, the church of San Felipe de Neri, The Heurtematte houses and the National Theater.

To then continue through the Plaza de Francia or Las Bóvedas, which dates from 1922 and has a semicircular style with a neo-Renaissance influence. In the centre stands an obelisk crowned with a rooster, a symbol of the French people. Surrounding this obelisk you can see the busts of the pioneering engineers of the canal, in addition to some arcades under which are ten plates that tell the history of the Panama Canal.

At the end of the tour, you will fall in love with this cultural centre and you will want to visit the Casco Antiguo again on your own.
